FAQ

Testosterone is a hormone produced in the male reproductive system, i.e., testes. It is responsible for the normal growth and development of the male sex organs and maintenance of other sexual characteristics. The production of testosterone is regulated by the hypothalamus and the pituitary gland. This test measures the level of testosterone hormone in your blood. Too high or too low testosterone levels cause health problems in both men and women.

You may get tested with testosterone if you observe the below symptoms. It is most commonly ordered if there are symptoms of low testosterone levels in men and high testosterone levels in females. Symptoms of low testosterone levels in males are as follows: Fatigue, Hair loss, Weak bones, Low muscle mass, Low sex drive, Erectile dysfunction, and Development of breast tissues Symptoms of high testosterone levels in females are as follows: Excess facial or body hair growth, deepening of voice, Acne or oily skin Weight gain, Irregularities in menstrual cycle

You may feel a little stinging-like sensation when a needle is inserted while collecting the sample and may experience slight bruising; however, it subsides with time.

Results may vary depending on gender, age, and severity. Abnormal results do not necessarily indicate the presence of any medical condition. Certain medicines and drinking alcohol a few hours prior to the test can affect your results. Consult your doctor for any further guidance. For men:High levels suggest a tumor in the testicles or adrenal glands. Low levels indicate problems with the functioning of the pituitary gland and/or testes. For women: High levels suggest polycystic ovary syndrome, which is a common hormonal disorder affecting women of childbearing age. It may also indicate cancer of the ovaries or adrenal glands. Low levels are normal, but extremely low levels suggest disorders of the pituitary gland.

Usually, testosterone hormone is attached to proteins in the blood. However, testosterone that is not attached to a protein is known as free testosterone. There are two main types of testosterone tests: Total testosterone - The test measures both attached and free testosterone in the blood. Free testosterone - The test measures only free testosterone in the blood.

A testosterone test is used in many cases as follows: To understand possible causes for infertility in men and women To diagnose tumours in reproductive organs To find out reasons for early or delayed puberty in boys
