Postprandial blood sugar

postprandial blood sugar

About this package
The postprandial blood sugar determines the glucose concentration 2 hours after having breakfast/ lunch. Blood sugar levels usually begin to rise 10-15 minutes after a meal and reach their peak after an hour. The pancreas produces the hormone insulin, which aids in the absorption of sugar from the bloodstream into the body cells. This test is used to assess how the body reacts to sugar and starch after eating a meal. Doctors recommend this test if your blood sugar continues to be excessively high or extremely low. Blood sugar levels in people who do not have diabetes normally return to normal within 2 hours.

FAQ

Postprandial Blood Sugar test (PPBS) is used to measure blood glucose level 2 hours after a meal. Blood sugar level increases post-meal and is brought back to normal by metabolic activity. However, in the case of diabetes, the sugar is not metabolised at an expected rate, and hence, PPBS testing helps understand how your body responds to food intake. This test also helps diagnose and monitor diabetes and keep track of overall diabetes management.

An intravenous blood sample is used for blood sugar testing, the sample should be collected 2 hours post intake of the meal.

You can visit our nearest center to avail this test. You can also get this test done in the comfort of your home, for which you can opt for our home collection services while booking.

The main source of glucose is the food we consume, whereas in case of fasting, the liver produces and releases glucose in the bloodstream. On the other hand, insulin is a hormone produced by the pancreas that helps regulate blood glucose levels and transport glucose molecules from the blood to cells.

In most cases, conditions like diabetes or Insulin resistance remain asymptomatic in the early stages and may impose severe health impacts in later stages. Monitoring blood glucose levels helps avoid serious health problems.

It is recommended to check both blood sugar levels both pre and post-meal (FBS and PPBS). This helps us to check if our diabetes management plan is working properly.

The alternative names for Postprandial Blood Sugar (PPBS) test are Postprandial Plasma Glucose (PPPG) and Postprandial Blood Glucose (PPBG).
