It mostly detects conditions like megaloblastic anaemia, in which the bone marrow produces structurally abnormal, unusually large, immature red blood cells. It can also look for pernicious anaemia, which is a type of megaloblastic anaemia caused by poor vitamin B12 absorption. This test is also recommended for the diagnosis of certain nervous system symptoms and malabsorption syndromes including coeliac disease and Crohn's disease.
The symptoms of vitamin B12 deficiency may not appear until it is severe, hence it is essential to get this test done when common signs of vitamin B12 appear- including, fatigue, pale skin, sore and inflamed tongue with mouth ulcers, numbness or tingling sensation in the hands and feet indicating nerve damage, vision problems, difficulty in maintaining balance.
Intravenous blood sample is used for this test. There is no special preparation required before getting this test done.
